German Ambassador: Armenia and Azerbaijan have different aspirations (video)
German ambassador to Armenia Rainer Morel says the Riga Summit was an important event. “The European Union has shown the world that the Eastern Partnership continues to be an important phenomenon,” Rainer Morel said on June 1. The diplomat says the most important statement made in Riga was that the EU will continue to support the ongoing reforms in its partner countries. At the same time Rainer Morel stressed that ‘the future will show what document Armenia will sign on the sidelines of the Summit.’ “As far as I know, six countries will sign an agreement. I think the economic components will be taken into account in case of Armenia, but I cannot make predictions. After joining the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) your country [Armenia] assumed certain liabilities and commitments, and this can also have its influence,” the ambassador stressed. Rainer Morel is sure that Armenia can make use of the free space in the European Union. “Trade, specifically commodity circulation, between Armenia and Germany has increased by 18 percent to total 235 million euros,” he said. The ambassador says the Summit should have made it clear for Armenia that no country can have advantage over another country. Mr Morel believes that Azerbaijan’s aspirations differ from those of Armenia. “Azerbaijan is inclined to have strategic relationship while Armenia wants to carry out democratic reforms,” he said.
