The operation of the Shushi liberation was one of the brilliant pages in the history of the Armenian nation. Major Mikael Bayatyan says, “Of course, we are sorry for our fallen friends, who cannot see this glorious victory. But we shall do everything for their souls to rest in peace there and for our people to be able to enjoy the fruits of this victory, strengthening and maintaining it,” he said. The soldiers who participated in the Artsakh war recall the events that happen 23 years ago with great pride. “But we cannot speak about an unpleasant thing.  We are nearing the 25th anniversary of the Shushi liberation but they are not saying anything about our fighting friends. They only speak about the fallen soldiers,” Karabakh war veteran Andranik Tonoyan told A1+. The freedom fighter is concerned that the authorities do not consult them in many important issues concerning the country. “We fought for this country, we created this homeland. It was not the 7-10 generals who fought for Armenia and Atsakh. The war was won thanks to Armenian soldiers, Armenian fidayis (freedom fighters) and Armenian people,” he stressed. Shushi was liberated on this day 23 years ago. During the Karabakh war, Shushi became one of Azerbaijan’s main military strongholds in Nagorno-Karabakh.  From this strategic location, the Azeri army  bombarded Karabakh’s capital Stepanakert and adjacent Armenian settlements. About 3,800 volunteers participated in the operation of liberation of Shushi on the night of May 8, 1992. The operation was led by Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan,Commander of the self-defense forces of Artsakh.Arkady Ter-Tadevosyan declared early on May 9 that all groupings of the enemy had left Shushi.
