Many in National Assembly unaware of incident involving Syunik Governor's son (video)
The Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun cannot say whether they will ever use the services of Governor of Syunik Marz Surik Khachatryan, who is linked to a number of high-profile crimes in Armenia. Head of the ARF-Dashnakstutyun faction in parliament, Armen Rustamyan, says he does not understand the question. “While you are in power, you should serve your people,” he said. Mr Rustamyan has a different vision of authorities. “When we come to power, everyone will be held accountable,” he said. Mikael Melkumyan, a lawmaker of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), seemed to be unaware of the recent incident with the participation of Khachatryan’s son. “I know what you are talking about. I was informed from the press,” he said. The oppositionist cannot say anything about the recent crime reportedly committed by Khachatryan’s son. “If someone has broken the law, he must be punished irrespective of his family background,” Melkumyan said. Vahram Baghdasaryan, head of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia, says he not know the details of the incident either. “I want everyone to stand before the law on an equal footing,” he said. Why isn’t the same law applied in case of Khachatryan’s son Tigran Khachatryan? Why isn’t he arrested given the fact that the victims identified him as an offender? “Sorry, but who is Tigran Khachatryan? I do not want to assume the role of a judge and make conclusions. When lawyers make a statement, we will comment on it,” said the Republican MP.
