Russia President Vladimir Putin today said at the Armenian Genocide Memorial on Tsisternakaberd hilltop that Russia sympathizes with the Armenian people who suffered one of the most terrible chapters in the history of the twentieth century. “Cultural monuments, books and manuscripts were destroyed. The events of 1915 have shocked the whole world. Russia perceived the suffering of the Armenian people as its own pain. Hundreds of thousands of helpless and homeless Armenians, millions have received shelter on the territory of Russia. Today we are mourning together with the Armenian people. Over 2000 commemorative events, involving not only members of the local Armenian community, but also representatives of other nations, are scheduled to be held in hundreds of cities of the Russian Federation on April 24,” he said. The Russian president stressed that the genocide cannot be justified. “We should look into the future with optimism and demonstrate kindness. We should respect each other and each other's interests. Only in that case shall we be able to make the world a better place. We are with you, dear friends!”
