Consumers’ rights are not protected in Armenia, says Melita Hakobyan, Chairperson of National Association of Consumers.

She says there is a lack of media that will inform consumers of their rights, that is why the National Association of Consumers receives numerous complaints from consumers.

“Most shopping centers violate the rights of consumers. They do not take back products while that law states that the seller is entitled to take back the product within 14 days if it is not damaged. There is a lack of consumers in Armenia, and sellers are happy to have their products sold,” she said.

Melita Hakobyan says many shops and businesses are closed because of the lack of consumers. “The social and economic conditions do not allow people to buy expensive clothes and food.”

Unlike Ms Hakobyan, sociologist Aharon Adibekyan says there has been an increase in consumption volumes.

The head of the National Association of Consumers regrets to say that many people in Armenia who opt for fast food. “Fast-food restaurants are increasing in the country. Mothers often encourage their children to study well promising to buy them hamburgers and cheeseburgers,” she said.
