Azerbaijan is ready to join the Eurasian Economic Union in case Armenia cedes part of its territories to Azerbaijan. Politicians in Armenia consider these announcements to be diplomatic games. “Azerbaijan is trying to make Russian understand its intention. Azerbaijan wants Russia to understand that if it wants to have a reliable partner which protects the interests of Russia in the international arena and has closer relations with it, it [Russia] should exert pressure on Armenia,” says political analyst Edgar Vadanyan. Political analyst Manvel Sargsyan thinks that Azerbaijan will never join the EEU and is simply trying to better its diplomatic ties with the US, Turkey and Russia. Asked whether Azerbaijan’s statements are dangerous for Armenia and whether Russia is able to neglect Armenia’s interests and make Azerbaijan an EEU member, political analyst Stepan Safaryan said, “It think Azerbaijan’s proposal is acceptable for Russia but Russia will not implement it no matter how tempting the proposal might sound,” he said. The expert says Russia does not have enough leverage to fulfill Azerbaijan’s desire. “You will hardly find anyone in Armenia both in the government and opposition camps who will give his consent to the peaceful return of these territories. Nor will the western countries allow such developments in the Karabakh issue,” Stepan Safaryan added. The political analysts do not think that the interior political situation in Armenia can have its influence on Russia and Azerbaijan. They are unanimous that Azerbaijan is trying to win Russia’s trust against the background of the geopolitical realities.
