Mercury pollution threatens Lake Sevan. Mercury has been found in upper currents basin of the Masrik River, which flows into Lake Sevan- in the territory of Sona reservoir and Verin Shorzha still in 1974-1978. Gold also has been found in the same territory. At present “Alluvial Gold Mining” CJSC has got a permission for searching gold in upper currents of the Masrik River and “International Gold” company is on the process of getting a permission. “Alluvial Gold Mining” CJSC will carry out exploration activities in 81.8 ha territory of Verin Shorzha community. “International Gold” company will carry out exploration activities in 695 ha administrative territory of Akunk community. It is predictable that the exploration activities will cause mercury leak into the basin of the Masrik River. More on the source website
