“Journalists weren’t touched” (video)
The 90s’ brought and took away the most freedom of the press. 25 years ago press in Armenia and Azerbaijan was more independent than it is now. There were several factors to be economically independent. “Journalists weren’t touched, they were respected,”- says “Yeni Nesil” Journalists Union Chairman Arif Aliyev. Another host of “Red Bridge” Aghasi Yenokyan also blames the journalists for the current situation. The violence against journalists has increased during 25 years. The situation in Azerbaijan is more troubling. The last incident was registered four days ago. The journalist of “Azatutyun” (Freedom) radio station Khadija Ismaylova, who is well known for her bold articles, has been arrested for two months. Azerbaijani authorities cover their persistent harassment of the journalist on charges of causing the suicide of another person. The journalist may be sentenced to 7 years of imprisonment.
