Republican MP: EEU is not the best option, but it is the most suitable one (video)
The response of the international community to the downing of an Armenian helicopter by Azerbaijan near the Line of Contact was inadequate, says Lernik Alexanyan, a member of the governing Republican Party's faction in parliament. While he says the assessment of international organizations is important, Mr Alexanyan reminds the words of the Armenian president who said Armenia will give a more painful response. The Republican lawmaker says the answer given by Armenia should show that the country is committed to the peaceful settlement of the Karabakh conflict. “Aliyev has problems in his country and the downing of the Armenian helicopter was an attempt by him to solve those problems,” says the MP. Besides, Aliyev wasn’t to show that he is a strong president. “I do not think that Aliyev is ready to start a war,” he added. Speaking about political developments in Armenia, Mr Alexanyan said today the opposition does not possess all resources to change the power. “Political forces that have different positions and different interested cannot be united,” he stressed. The Republican lawmaker says although Armenia’s membership to the Eurasian Economic Union is not the best option, it is the most suitable one at this moment. “Since the 90s, Armenia has deepened its economic, strategic and security ties with Russia and the country's accession to the EEU is very important in this context,” he said.
