Russia intervened in Ukraine’s internal affairs without consulting with the CSTO member states and has actually invaded the Autonomous Republic of Crimea. Russia's upper house of parliament has approved President Putin's request to deploy Russian troops in Ukraine, political analyst Andrias Ghukasyan said in a statement. “These actions conflict with Russia's international obligations and are in violation with the Collective Security Treaty (Articles 1 and 2), which expires on April 20, 2014. Along with other CSTO members, Armenia is facing a historic choice; it has to shoulder the responsibility [with Russia] for invading Ukraine, or quit the CSTO. No matter what decision is adopted, the consequences will be of great importance for the future of Armenia. I am convinced that the majority of our people will agree that Armenia should not be involved in the pending war for Ukraine that will be unleashed by the European Union and Russia. It is time that Armenia declared about its neutral position. No matter how dangerous and complicated our path to independent existence might seem, it is the only path and the country’s fate is in the hands of our people,” reads the statement.
