Police stop protesters from approaching CEC building: New Armenia ends march
Support A1+!Hundreds of citizens participated in the march of the New Armenia opposition group disputing the outcome of a referendum on constitutional changes. Chanting “Death to the Regime!” the group reached the Central Electoral Commission where they were stopped by a heavy police cordon. Today the protesters were met by Valeri Osipyan, Deputy Chief of the Yerevan Police. Andrias Ghukasyan, a member of the New Armenia movement, addressed Mr Osipyan over a megaphone asking him to open the way and stressing that it was a peaceful march. “Police cannot allow you to continue the protest outside the CEC building. Police are guided by laws and the Constitution. You have broken laws in the past several days,” the Police official said. More than 1000 people are standing here now. Have they violated any rule? Your statement is unfounded,” said Mr Ghukasyan. The protesters began shouting “Shame!” They did not start scuffles with the police and returned to Liberty Square to continue their round-the-clock sit-in.
