The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has received a complaint filed by the legal successors of Gurgen Margaryan and Hayk Makuchyan, lawyer Nazeni Vardanyan, who represents the interests of Margaryan's family in Budapest, told A1+.

The lawyer says they have submitted with the ECtHR the grounds proving that neither Armenia, nor Margaryan's legal successors and Hayk Mukuchyan were aware of pending extradition of Ramil Safarov, an Azerbaijani officer who axed Armenian serviceman Gurgen Margaryan to death in his sleep at a NATO training course in Budapest in 2004.
Hayk Makuchyan is another Armenian serviceman who miraculously survived death in Budapest and whom the Hungarian court declared the injured party.

In April 2006 a court in Budapest sentenced Safarov to life imprisonment. However, on August 31, 2012, he was extradited to Baku, where he was pardoned and set free, after serving eight years of his term.

Later the same day, Armenia suspended diplomatic relations and all official contacts with Hungary in response to Budapest's decision to repatriate Safarov.
