Gaining independence
On 95th anniversary of the proclamation of the first republic of Armenia historian Mher Hovhannsiyan said, that it was the victory of unity because all layers of Armenian society had come for Aram Manukyan's call.
The historian draws parallels between the creation of the first and third republics.
"The victories of 1918 were a bright example of unity for the Armenian people. If we compare them to the awakening national liberation movement at the end of 1980s we can see the same unity at a moment when the matter of the existence of the Armenian people was at stake", he said.
1918 was the very period when the Armenian nation was alone against the whole world. Georgia had found its ally - Germany, and Azerbaijan was the ally of Turkey. "And Armenia was the only one, which gained its independence by struggle", the historian said.
He also added that the heroic fights of May in 1918 were the proof of Armenians' unity.
