Gas consumption refers to all layers of the society; hence its transparency is highly desirable, says Vardan Bostanjyan, a lawmaker from the Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP).

While the PAP MP considers the hike in gas prices a normal thing, he says the level of transparency has not been ensured.

Mkrtich Minasyan, a lawmaker from the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA), disagreed with his PAP colleague saying the authorities have always ensured the transparency of their actions, and the discussion on the controversial new tariffs [to be held on May 23] will be open and transparent.

"As compared with European countries, gas prices are 50-200 percent lower in Armenia. Our government has already started negotiations with the Russian side," he said.
Both Minasyan and Bostanjyan think that the people will not mutiny against the new gas prices.

"Of course our people can rise in revolt but I do not predict civil unrest. Nothing is impossible; the government should work effectively," said Bostanjyan.

"Cold water will still be poured over the heads of those who believe that the executive body cannot do anything," added Mkrtich MInasyan.
