The 90 year-old veteran
On May 9, veteran of the Great Patriotic War Vera Jaghatspanyan-Tonkonogova is being called from different countries of the world.
In 1941 when the war broke up she was 17. After 3 days the pupils of the school she studied at were sent to the town of Bryansk to gather the harvest. She was among them. They could not return for two weeks.
"Our parents did not know where we were or what had happened to us. They were told that Bryansk was already in enemy's hands and that we were dead".
During the whole period of war Vera Tonkonogova worked in Stalingrad hospital as a nurse.
Each year, on May 9 she gets the old photographs from the shelves and watches and recalls the war days.
"We believed in our victory. Until now I watch all those movies of war with tears".
Mrs. Vera is Russian. She married Davit Jaghatspanyan during the war and moved to Yerevan. She then started to work in school after A. Pushkin where she works up to this day. She specially emphasizes: most of her pupils are now on high positions. Tigran Sargsyan is one of them.
Vera Tonkonogova will turn 90 in summer.
