New arrest in Gyumri murder case

Police in Armenia have revealed new details in connection with a high-profile murder committed in Armenia's Gyumri city earlier this week.

According to the report, Gevorg Khachatryan, a 18-year-old citizen of Gyumri, showed up at the the Gyumri department of the Armenian police on April 25 and surrendered an AK-74 rifle.

Khachatryan announced that he wanted to follow Vahe Ghukasyan who wounded his father Harutyun Khachatryan during the shooting. Gevorg Khachatryan was arrested.

Two men were shot outside an apartment block on Shirakatsi Street in Gyumri on April 23. Harutyun Khachatryan, better known in Gyumri as "Kamoyakan Godfather Harut," and Artyom Karapetyan, nicknamed "Killer Sheko," were wounded in the gun fight near Khachatryan's apartment at around 1p.m., April 23. Karapetyan died in hospital later in the day.

On April 24, the local police arrested Vahe Ghukasyan, a nephew of Gyumri's ex-mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, as the main suspect in the case. The latter pleaded guilty to the crime. Vahe's brother, Kolya Ghukasyan, was detained at an Armenian-Georgian border crossing following the shootings on Tuesday.
