Students continue boycott against vote rigging
Scores of students of Yerevan State University again boycotted classes and took to the streets against what they said ‘fraudulent presidential elections.'
A group of civil activists had joined the protesters supporting the official runner up of the presidential election, opposition candidate Raffi Hovannisian, who call for a rerun of the Feb. 18 presidential election.
Outside the YSU building they confronted YSU staff members and their fellow students supporting the pro-government candidate Serzh Sargsyan, who was declared Armenia's fourth president by the country's Central Election Commission on Monday.
Civil activist Ruzanna Grigoryan and YSU lecturer, member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) Gevorg Melkonyan started to quarrel, with the HHK represnettaive claiming that the strike is a political rather than a civil action aimed at ‘orienting students.'
Gevorg Melkonyan demanded that the group leave the territory of the university while Ruzanna Grigoryan said she was exercising her constitutional right and could demonstrate wherever she wants.
Accompanied by a group of policemen, the protesters are heading for the Medical University.
Alik Gharibyan, head of the YSU staff, informed A1+ that the University's gates were open and all students who want to join the strike are free to do it.
Students angered by the conduct of the February 18 vote declared an open-ended boycott of classes on February 25.
