Two arrested over assassination attempt on Hayrikyan
Two people have been arrested in connection with the latest assassination attempt against Armenia's presidential candidate Paruyr Hayrikyan.
One of the arrestees, Khachatur Poghosyan, 47, was earlier sentenced to prison term for illegal drug trafficking. The other suspect is Samvel Harutyunyan, 41. Both of them confessed to the attempted murder of the presidential candidate, NSS press service reports.
The motives of the crimes are under investigation. The public will periodically be informed about the probe.
Paruyr Hayrikyan, one of eight people contesting the 18 February poll, was shot and wounded in his shoulder in an assassination attempt on January 31.
Hayrikyan, who is seen as one of the outsiders in the upcoming ballot, spent a number of years in Soviet prison camps and in exile for being a member of a clandestine political organization as well as for his anti-establishment writings.
