Three more opposition activists would have been in prison today besides Tigran Arakelyan, if their lawyers had not filed an appeal to the Court of Cassation.

The lawyers are disputing the verdict of the Appellate Court which had earlier upheld the verdict of a lower court. However, supporters of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK), who again gathered outside the Friday Prosecutor General's Office in Yerevan, do not pin hope on the Cassation Court.

Opposition activists Tigran Arakelyan, Artak Karapetyan, Sargis Gevorgyan and David Kiramijyan were taken into custody after an August 2011 standoff with police officers in a Yerevan park. They were charged with hooliganism against a representative of law-enforcement body and sentenced to 2-6 years in prison.
