The opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) today reached an agreement with the ruling coalition to set up an ad hoc committee to probe into the deadly March 1, 2008 events after February's presidential election.

"Otherwise the National Assembly's Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs would have given a negative conclusion," says HAK MP Gagik Jhangiryan.

Levon Zurabyan, Coordinator of the opposition alliance, does not believe the pledges of the ruling Republican Party (HHK) which promised to vote in favor of the opposition's proposal after February's presidential vote.
However, NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan today guaranteed at the National Assembly that they would vote for the formation of an ad hoc committee. "We were able to break the authorities' resistance," said Levon Zurabyan. "And if they go back on their promise given in front of the public, they will discredit themselves."

Naira Zohrabyan, a lawmaker of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), says HAK should not have agreed with the authorities.

"To postpone the issue for a year and to be sure that it will be approved in a year? I am not so optimist as Gagik Jhangiryan whom I consider to be an experienced MP," she said.
