At least 34 people have been killed and many injured by two car bomb explosions in a south-eastern district of Syria's capital, Damascus, the Voice of America reports.

The blasts took place in Jaramana, a suburb district in Damascus, which is predominantly populated by Druze and Christian, two communities which have so far not joined the uprising. Television footage shows firemen hosing down the remains of charred vehicles. Debris from the blasts was scattered about the street.

SANA state news agency called the attack an act of "terrorists."

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says violence across the country has killed more than 40,000 people since an uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad began in March of last year.
