Armenia has highest rate of diabetes in region
November 14 marks World Diabetes Day.
According to the World Health Organization, Armenia comes first in the region with the number of people with diabetes, diabetes-related mortality rate and prevalence of diabetes, says Karine Mkhitaryan, Director of Yeraz (Dream) Charity Foundation.
"People with diabetes number 56,000 in Armenia, with 400 of them being children," Yelena Aghajanova, Head of the Endocrinology Department, of Muratsan hospital, told a press conference on Wednesday.
She says it is highly important to raise public awareness to facilitate treatment of the disease.
"Many people are unaware of diabetes which is easier to treat in the initial stages," she said.
The Foundation has organized a number of courses in Yerevan and Aparan schools to inform schoolchildren and teachers of symptoms and treatment of diabetes.
