Dozens of families left without homes
Among the families that became homeless as a result of the 1988 earthquake in Gyumri, there are dozens of people who did not lose their homes in the devastating earthquake but were considered homeless by a court decision.
Most of these families lived in rented apartments or with their relatives waiting for their turn on the public housing list.
In 2008, these families were denied housing on ground that they did not lose their homes in the earthquake or did not submit the required documents with the committee.
It is noteworthy that the same court that earlier recognized these families as homeless did not oblige the competent authorities to provide them with housing. As a result, these families continue to live in temporary shelters with no hope of getting homes.
Shirak Center NGO has visited one of these families living in a shack in the centre of the city.
