Stepan Safaryan to run for parliament
Heritage party today nominated its secretary Stepan Safaryan to run for parliament in a single-seat constituency of Yerevan's Avan and Nor-Nork districts.
The seat was vacated after former MP Ruben Hayrapetyan gave up his seat in parliament following the public uproar over the death of military doctor Vahe Avetyan who was severely beaten up at his Harsnakar restaurant in Avan district.
Avetyan died in hospital 12 days later without regaining consciousness. Following the tragedy, civil activists, NGOs and ordinary citizens organized protests demanding to strip Ruben Hayrapetyan of his parliamentary mandate.
The election is scheduled for December 2.
