BHK MP attends protest organised by HAK
The Armenian National Congress (HAK) is continuing its Friday protests outside the General Prosecutor's Office in support of its imprisoned young activists.
HAK calls for the release of its four activists - Tigran Arakelyan, Sargis Gevorgyan, David Kiramijyan and Artak Karapetyan, who were sent to 2-6 years in prison by a July 20 decision of a Yerevan court.
Elinar Vardanyan, an MP of the Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK), chair of the NA Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, today joined the demonstrators outside the Prosecutor's Office. She says that the court verdict was not equivalent to the offence committed by the HAK activists.
HAK MPs Aram Manukyan and Levon Zurabyan also addressed the participants. Some 50 citizens gathered on the site state that the HAK activists were sentenced to prison because of their political affiliation.
The HAK activists were taken into custody on August 9, 2011, after a standoff with police in a Yerevan park.
