NATO: Hungary is not responsible for murder of Armenian officer
Those gathered today in Yerevan State University were waiting for NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen to express his opinion about the extradition of Azerbaijani criminal Ramil Safarov to Azerbaijan and his glorification.
Let us remind that Ramil Safarov axe-murdered Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan during a NATO-organized English language course in Budapest in 2004.
The Secretary General of NATO expressed concern about Azerbaijan's granting of a pardon to Safarov, saying that this "damages trust and does not contribute to peace and reconciliation".
In his words, this tragic and terrible incident was a crime "which should not be glorified"...
"NATO's position is very clear... It is not Hungary that is responsible for this criminal act. It was a crime committed by an individual, an Azerbaijani army officer. He was brought to court in Hungary, he was sentenced to many years in prison, and he was treated in Hungary according to the basic principles of the rule of law. I understand that the transfer of Mr. Safarov from Hungary to Azerbaijan has taken place based on an agreement that follows international norms and standards. Let me stress that I am angry and deeply concerned by Azerbaijan's decision and tomorrow I will visit Baku and convey my message exactly in the same way as I have done today".
Andres Fogh Rasmussen stated that NATO supports the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group and it is clear that the Nagorno Krabakh conflict cannot be solved by military means.
