Armenian officer’s life threatened
The statements that Serzh Sargsyan and Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan made following Ramil Safarov's extradition are belated actions.
Former deputy of Heritage faction, the first Armenian Ombudswoman Ms. Larisa Alaverdyan expressed this opinion at a meeting with journalists today.
She said that in addition to the steps taken at a state level, society should become more active in this issue. "No one prevents society from intervening and helping to solve this issue at the international level thanks to its active participation".
The former deputy believes that Armenia's actions regarding the Safarov issue should be taken in two directions. The first direction is that another Armenian officer, Hayk Makuchyan, whom Safarov also attempted to murder, should sue Safarov in a European court. "Safarov is now at large - a circumstance that threatens that officer's life, which is a serious circumstance".
In the opinion of Larisa Alaverdian, the second direction is that Armenia should exercise its right to appeal to all international structures by presenting the facts and proving the racist nature of the Azerbaijani state.
Another speaker of the press conference, lawyer Ara Khzmalyan said that Armenia cannot currently apply to any court. "An international court may take a case for examination only in case of a consent given by two countries, namely Armenia and Azerbaijan, and naturally Azerbaijan will withhold its consent".
The lawyer added that however, nothing prevents Armenia from taking such steps through international organizations and these will become serious political moves, although they have no legal basis.
