The flag of Hungary today was "attacked" with thousands of tomatoes outside the Consulate of Hungary in Yerevan as a sign of protest against the extradition Azerbaijani officer Ramil Safarov who murdered Armenian officer Gurgen Margaryan in 2004 during a NATO exercise in Budapest.

This was the first reaction of a group of young activists from the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) who gathered outside the Consulate to protest Hungary's decision to release the vicious murderer who had been sentenced to life imprisonment by Hungary. The protest action was also attended by activists from regions.

"We want to call the attention of international organizations and urge them to take swift steps to exclude repetition of similar things in future," said Karen Avagyan, a HHK lawmaker.

Asked whether Armenian authorities have their share of guilt in what happened, Mr. Avagyan said, "Who would have thought that the Hungarian authorities would make a deal with Azerbaijan?"

After ‘bombarding' the flag with tomatoes, the participants of the protest wanted to burn it but Karen Avagyan prevented them.
