Italy is preparing to exhume the body of one of the country's founding fathers after claims his tomb may have been tampered with.

Giuseppe Garibaldi, a 19th century general, is thought to be buried on an island near Sardinia.

His descendants claim that the site may not contain his body.
Garibaldi led military campaigns that led to the country's reunification. For centuries, Italy was divided into independent states, Euronews reports.

Giuseppe Garibaldi wanted to be cremated after his death but this was refused for "political and religious" reasons.

Garibaldi died on June 2, 1882.
