Discussion was held during closed session
Armenian ministers today avoided giving clarifications regarding Syrian-Armenian immigrants, and only Minister of Justice Hrair Tovmasyan declared that he was not competent to answer such questions. However, he didn't deny the fact that the government had discussed the issue.
"There were some questions raised during the government's closed session, and the Prime Minister gave assignments," said Tovmasyan.
Head of the State Migration Service of Armenia Gagik Yeganyan gave clarifications regarding the return of Syrian-Armenians to their homeland and the granting of a refugee status. According to Yeganyan, only 6 Syrian-Armenian families with 14 members have appealed to the Agency to move to Armenia.
"We're conducting studies to find out if they truly need shelter or if they think they can take advantage of the refugee regime to settle in Armenia."
According to Yeganyan, the government is currently discussing the issue of providing all the immigrants with shelter. Even though there are a limited number of homes, Armenia can receive another 20 families.
Yeganyan assured that if Armenia sees large flows of Syrian-Armenian migrants, then the government will use the reserves of all the ministries.
