Top Syrian general defects to Turkey
A top general of the Syrian army has defected to Turkey with several soldiers, Interfax reported citing Turkish diplomatic sources.
According to the news agency, about 18 Syrian generals have fled to Turkey during the 16 months of clashes. At least 42 700 refugees from Syria have settled in Turkey in these months.
Amid the ongoing conflict between the country's opposition and the Bashar al-Assad administration, a number of senior officers have sought asylum in the neighboring country or joined the ranks of the opposition.
