Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly calls for proceedings against Ruben Hayrapetyan
Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office condemns the violence used by MP Ruben Hayrapetyan against human rights defender Arman Veziryan.
In a statement issued on Monday the Office said the brutal violence was accompanied by overt cynicism and defiant attitude towards public opinion.
The incident occurred during an event organized on the seventh day of tragic death of military doctor Vahe Avetyan who was severely beaten by Ruben Hayrapetyan's bodyguards and security guards at the Harsnakar restaurant complex owned by the Hayrapetyan family.
"We believe that the incident was resulted by the authorities' failure to give an adequate assessment to the violence against Vahe Avetyan and his friends.
We demand that Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan submit a petition to the National Assembly urging the legislative body to strip Ruben Hayrapetyan of immunity and initiate criminal proceedings against him.
Also, on the basis of Article 70 of Armenia's Constitution, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan must convene a special siiting of the National Assembly to discuss the Prosecutor General's petition," Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office said in the statement.
