Armenia's Permanent Representative to the UN Karen Nazaryan has touched upon the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict during a discussion devoted to issues on protection of civilians during conflicts at the UN Security Council.

Karen Nazaryan mentioned that the Azerbaijani government was responsible for violating the rights of hundreds of thousands of deported and refugee Armenians, the ethnic cleansing and aggression that it unleashed in response to the Nagorno-Karabakh people exercising their right to self-determination, as well as the massacres against the Azerbaijani in Khojalu.

Ambassador Nazaryan also informed the SC members that the conflict has led to the demolition of Armenian residences, including Artsvashen, the Shahumyan, Getashen and 18 other villages in the northern region of the NKR, which have remained as territories seized by Azerbaijan for two decades.

In that context, the Ambassador mentioned that Armenia welcomed the declaration made by the leaders of the Minsk Group Co-Chairing countries and called upon the Azerbaijani side to put an end to all types of provocations, including the actions of diversion groups at the border with Armenia and the line of contact with Nagorno-Karabakh.

In his speech, Nazaryan also touched upon issues relating to the development of the UN's conception on the protection of civilians and attached importance to the improvement of the application of the sanctions regime and the implementation of compulsory resolutions.
