Why does Azerbaijan continually shell Armenian villages?
"Azerbaijanis want to show that the status quo in Karabakh issue is not advantageous to them, therefore they seek new hostilities," says political scientist Ervand Bozoyan.

Is not accidental that the village of Chinari [in Tavush province] was shelled at night, hours before the arrival of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Usually Azerbaijan demonstrates such aggressive behaviour to show the international community and observers that it is against the maintenance of status quo," said Mr. Bozoyan.

Speaking about political developments in Armenia, the political scientist said on May 6 Armenians witnessed a ‘paper revolution,' with the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) concealing its real electorate.

"The HHK garnered 44 percent of votes, i.e. 660 000 people voted for the party," he said.

To show that the HHK exaggerated the real number of its votes, the political scientist reminded that in 1999 the "Miasnutyun" (Unity) Alliance led by Karen Demirtchyan and Vazgen Sargsyan garnered 450 000 votes.

"Serzh Sargsyan and Tigran Sargsyan turn out to have higher popularity than Karen Demirtchyan and Vazgen Sargsyan," he said.

Mr. Bozoyan is more concerned with next year's presidential elections.

"In fact, [on May 6] Serzh Sargsyan sent a message to the public saying that he is not going to step down and if people want to change him, they should resort to traditional methods," he concluded.
