EMI calls on Azerbaijan to commit to European values
On the occasion of the European Movement International (EMI) Federal Assembly meeting in Brussels, its President Jo Leinen called for a clear commitment to European values from the Government of Azerbaijan. The country being a member of the Council of Europe, it is absolutely necessary to know that fundamental European values are being respected in the country.
Recent reports of difficulties within Azerbaijan have triggered confusion and concern within the members of the European Movement International. With ongoing negotiations for a closer cooperation between the European Union and Azerbaijan and an association agreement on the way, there should be no more uncertainty about our common values.
"During my visit to Azerbaijan as newly elected President of the European Movement International, I discovered a country looking ahead towards a close relationship with Europe. We should all work together to create strong and fruitful ties based on common values between Azerbaijan and Europe", said EMI President Jo Leinen.
With the creation of a European Movement National Council in Azerbaijan, there is now for the first time a pro-European NGO in Azerbaijan, covering all parts of the political spectrum and of society."I highly welcome this initiative built up by many young people" said Jo Leinen.
