Armenian FM meets Iranian leadership
On April 29, Armenia's Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian arrived in Tehran on the invitation of his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi. On the same day, the Armenian official was received by the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. During the meeting, Minister Nalbandian conveyed to the Iranian President the greetings of his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan.
Iranian President and the Armenian FM expressed satisfaction with the cooperation between the two countries and discussed the implementation of joint economic projects, including the construction of Iran-Armenia high-voltage electricity transmission line and hydro power plants on the Aras (Araks) River. Iran President stressed the importance of these projects.
In Tehran, the Armenian Foreign Minister also met with his Iranian counterpart Ali Akbar Salehi to discuss the activity of intergovernmental committee which is scheduled to convene its next sitting in Yerevan in summer. They dwelt on the cooperation between the two countries in the spheres of transport, energy, customs, environment, education, health, agriculture and culture.
The Armenian FM presented his Iranian counterpart the latest developments in the Karabakh peace deal, emphasizing the importance of Iran's balanced position in the issue. The meeting was followed by a joint press conference.
Majlis (Parliament) Speaker Ali Larijani was the next to receive the Armenian official. Minister Nalbandian underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and effective cooperation between the legislative bodies of the two countries. The interlocutors also exchanged opinions on a number of regional issues.
