Joachim Gauck was sworn in as German president on Friday, replacing Christian Wulff who was forced to step down over corruption allegations in February.

The former East German rights campaigner [Joachim Gauck], who was appointed to the post on March 18 with broad bipartisan support, becomes the 11th president of the Federal Republic of Germany.

The swearing-in ceremony took place in the Reichstag building in Berlin, which houses the German Bundestag. Present at the even was also Christian Wulff who announced his resignation on February 17 after he was accused of financial impropriety and doing political favors for associates while he was state premier of Lower Saxony.

Gauck is the first president who is not from the West and is not affiliated with any party.
