“HAK has worked out an adequate plan”
The Armenian National Congress (HAK) has nominated 38 candidates to participate in the May 6 parliamentary elections through the majoritarian electoral order.
As to why the HAK has no candidates in the other three precinct, HAK coordinator Levon Zurabyan said the HAK "didn't find an appropriate and efficient way of leading a struggle in these precincts". The precincts are N 28 in Kotayk province, N 33 in Shirak province and N 40 in Tavush province.
As far as the proportional list is concerned, Levon Zurabyan mentioned that it was composed of 125 candidates. He underlined that during preparation, the HAK nominated RA First President Levon Ter-Petrosyan after meetings with political parties and political councils and took into account the candidates' popularity and their contributions to politics throughout the past years. Guided by this principle, the People's Party of Armenia (HZHK), the Armenian Pan-National Movement (HHSh) and the "Republic" (Hanrapetutyun) political parties hold pivotal spots on the HAK's proportional list.
As for the Social-Democratic (Hnchakyan) Party (SDHK), according to Levon Zurabyan, after the illegitimate actions against this political party, the HAK was compelled to include the SDHK members in the list of other political parties so that nothing would stand in their way of being nominated. The HAK is participating in the elections as an alliance of 10 political parties.
Zurabyan is certain that the HAK will form if not an absolute, but at least a relative majority in the future parliament, and in this case, it will be fighting against the regime, not for the proportional list.
Before today's press conference, HAK member, former deputy Khachatur Sukiasyan paid a visit to the HAK central office where he talked with Levon Zurabyan for nearly half an hour and announced that the HAK coordinator would present all the details regarding their meeting. During the press conference, Zurabyan informed that he and Khachatur Sukiasyan had worked out a plan to use their diplomatic sources and give an adequate response to the pressures on Sukiasyan's nomination.
Khachatur Sukiasyan's brother, Saribek Sukiasyan has been nominated through the majoritarian electoral order at precinct N 10. If Khachatur Sukiasyan is not registered as a candidate, he will be supported by his brother. In addition, both brothers are included in the HAK's proportional list (10th and 12th). "We call on those voting at precinct N 10 to not tolerate the illegal acts and support the development of democracy," said Zurabyan.
The HAK has yet to determine its slogan and select the head of its pre-electoral headquarters.
