To set date for closing nuclear plant?
The European Parliament's Foreign Relations committee today is holding a three-day sitting, and issues related to the South Caucasus are also on the agenda.
According to Radio Liberty, the European legislators on Thursday are supposed to give consent to two documents related to the South Caucasus. The documents have been assigned to be approved through a vote and will be applied in the negotiations over the Associated Agreements with Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The draft of the document related to Armenia was prepared by Tomas Pyotr Poremba and includes three basic provisions.
One of them is that the Associated Agreement refers to the entire territory of Armenia. This also means something in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution because the same formulation exists in the draft document related to Azerbaijan. There is also a provision stating that the European Union wishes to play a more active role in the negotiations over the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution and would particularly like to support the efforts of the OSCE Minsk Group.
The draft in discussion also refers to the Armenian nuclear plant in Metsamor, which, according to the European Union, is a matter of concern.
"It is necessary to determine the specific timeframe for terminating its activities," as stated in the draft, which will be applied in the negotiations over the Associated Agreement with Armenia upon confirmation.
