Armenia's first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan was not invited to the congress of the Free Democrats. Ex-foreign minister Vartan Oskanyan, who has recently joined the Prosperous Armenia party (BHK), was among the invitees.

Free Democrats representative Ararat Zurabyan said ‘Oskanian's presence at the congress doesn't relieve him of the responsibility of the March 2008 tragic events.

Free Democrats leader Khachatur Kokobelyan said he had a deep respect for Levon Ter-Petrosyan but since there were some technical issues, they found sending out an invitation to be formal.

The party had also invited member of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK) Aram Sargsyan and leader of the New Times party (NZhK) Aram Karapetyan.

"We have invited those political forces, who, in our opinion, do not impede the process of democratization," said Mr Kokobelyan.

He said that his party was going to run for parliament in alliance with the Heritage party but he did not know when the joint electoral list would be released. in his part, Heritage representative Ararat Zurabyan said his party would announce its stance on the alliance after if held a sitting on March 18.

"Only a nuclear war can hinder the alliance between Heritage and Free Democrats," said Mr Zurabyan.
Kokobelyan added that the list would likely be headed by Heritage leader Raffi Hovannisian.
