Tried the mayor
Yerevan Municipality today was accused of committing illegal acts by environmental activists. They held a public trial at Mashtots Park and demanded the demolition of the trade stands placed at the park.
"If not, we will have to destroy them ourselves and defend our social rights," lawyer Artur Grigoryan declared.
Since the state bodies refuse to accept the environmentalists' lawsuit, they organized a public trial.
"We have to self-organize and stand up for our rights in any way," Artur Grigoryan mentioned.
The municipality representative, which was the defendant, didn't show up, even though the environmentalists said he had been notified. However, the police were there and announced that if the environmentalists tried to damage the stands, they would be brought to justice.
"It was a forum. People expressed their views, asked questions and received answers. I don't think that's a trial," Deputy Police Chief of Yerevan Robert Melkonyan told "A1+".
The environmental activists will announce their verdict on March 16. Until then, they have declared a round-the-clock sitting strike.
Police are impeding citizens from setting up tents in the park.
