Turkey punishing Sarkozy
"Turkey will continue to apply sanctions against France as long as the bill criminalizing genocide denial is on the agenda," Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Byulet Arench told presses.
"We are pleased to see that the Constitutional Council of France made that decision (denying the bill criminalizing Armenian Genocide denial-ed.), but we will continue the sanctions against France in order to counterattack Sarkozy's intentions to prepare a new bill," said Arench.
On February 28, the Constitutional Council of France recognized the law criminalizing Armenian Genocide denial adopted by the French Senate on January 23 as unconstitutional.
After that, President Sarkozy declared his intention to prepare a new bill on that issue.
In December 2011, as a sign of protest, Turkey suspended political and economic partnership with France and cancelled the joint military drills.
