ARF-D, HAK and “Heritage” join forces
The issue of making the transition to the 100 percent proportional electoral order has brought several political forces together.
The Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun (ARF-D), "Heritage" Party and the Armenian National Congress (HAK) organized a joint protest near the building of the National Assembly today.
The parliamentary and extra-parliamentary oppositional forces teamed up with the demand to replace the majoritarian electoral order with the 100 percent proportional electoral order.
"The majoritarian order is not bad, but there is no such thing as a majoritarian order in Armenia. Apparently, that is some code for feudal regimes," said leader of "Heritage" Party Raffi Hovhannisyan in an interview with "A1+".
HAK activist Karen Tovmasyan said he couldn't mention anyone who was not rich, was literate and was elected to the National Assembly through the majoritarian electoral order.
"The oligarchs, criminals and the notable figures of the districts have become the main supporting base for the ruling regime, and that is why Serzh Sargsyan relies on criminals," the HAK activist mentioned.
ARF-D Deputy Vahan Hovhannisyan was very pleased to see both oppositional and coalition forces joining their initiative to make the transition to the 100 percent proportional electoral order.
"Prosperous Armenia Party (BHK) went ahead of us and filed an appeal to hold parliamentary hearings on this, and we did hold hearings," said Mr. Hovhannisyan.
Although the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) has gone against the idea of making the transition to the proportional electoral order, Vahan Hovhannisyan says there is a chance that the National Assembly will accept the proposal of making the transition.
The elections for the National Assembly of Armenia will take place on May 6.
