Eight years have passed since the Armenian Lieutenant Gurgen Markarian, 26, was brutally murdered during a NATO language course in Hungary.

On February 19, 2004, Markarian was axed, while asleep, by his fellow Azerbaijani participant, Lieutenant Ramil Safarov.

On April 13, 2006, Budapest District Court Ramil Safarov sentenced Safarov to life in prison for murdering Margaryan. On February 22, 2007, Budapest Court rejected the Azerbaijani military officer's appeal against the verdict, precluding possibility of pardon for the initial 30 years.
Today a procession is being held in Yerevan in memory of the slain lieutenant. The event is organized by the Union of Young Universitarians NGO.

On February 20, Armenian hackers attacked over 20 Azerbaijani websites in Markarian's memory.
