Human rights activist to become German President
East German human rights activist Joachim Gauck will likely become the next president of Germany, Chancellor Angela Merkel said after Christian Wulff resigned over a corruption probe.
Merkel's government partners and the main opposition parties agreed to appoint Mr Gauck, 72, as a consensus candidate.
During the previous elections, Angela Merkel disapproved of Joachim Gauck and supported Christian Wulff as the country's next president.
