Satellite to clean space garbage
The Swiss have prepared a device that cleans garbage in space. The researchers at the Federal Technology Institute two years to prepare the device and they hope the cleaning device will be in orbit in 2016.
According to NASA, there are more than 16,000 pieces of "space garbage" in space. Even though each of them is smaller than 10 centimeters, it is dangerous when the pieces of garbage collide with satellites and the international space stations.
"There have already been cases when the illuminators have been damaged by the blows of pieces of space garbage," says Professor of the Federal Technology Institute of Switzerland Claude Nicolie.
The Clean Space One device is 30 cm long, 10 cm wide and 10 cm high. While in orbit, the device will follow the object, catch it, pull it away and take it to the thick layers of the atmosphere where the object will burn with the garbage.
