Russia's passivity in the issue of Iran is temporary, says Ruben Safrastyan, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Armenian National Academy of Sciences.

"If the West continues its military preparations and reaches the climax, Russia, as a nuclear superpower, will take appropriate diplomatic actions," he said.

Anyway, if the U.S. and Great Britain decide to take large-scale actions against Iran, they will use the territory of Azerbaijan. In return, Baku will want to settle the Karabakh issue in a military way.

Mr Safrastyan says Azerbaijan is already considering the scenario of Iran's dismemberment.
"Azerbaijan may also try to take aggressive measures against Iran, using the factor of South Azerbaijan," he said.

In the given circumstances, Armenia should preserve neutrality as it did in 2008 during the Russian-Georgian conflict.

Ruben Safrastyan hopes that the crisis in Iran will help activate Armenia's diplomacy.

While maintaining good relations with Iran, Russia and the United State, Armenia can come become a mediator between the conflicting sides," he said.
