Armenian Parliament's Standing Committee on State and Legal Affairs is currently debating a proposal on holding parliamentary hearings to discuss the switch to a 100-perecent proportional electoral system. The proposal is co-authored by the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaktsutyun, Heritage and Prosperous Armenia Party.

Committee member Hovhannes Sahakyan (Republican Party of Armenia) says the Committee will likely approve the proposal.

"We have nothing to hide and are ready to substantiate our viewpoint during the hearings and discussions. At the same time, we want to give our partners an opportunity to share their views on the issue. I am convinced that they will not present any weighty arguments during the debates," he said.

He also informed us that the hearings will probably be held during the second four-day sitting of the NA spring session, when the authors of the initiative present a formal motion.

Recall that the ARF-D and Heritage proposed a package of legislative changes thereby suggesting shifting to a 100-percent proportional election system. The Prosperous Armenia Party (PAP), a junior coalition member, has joined the initiative.
