The National Assembly of France today adopted the draft law criminalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide.

The draft law will enter into legal force after it is adopted by the Upper Chamber of the French Senate and ratified by President of France Nikola Sarkozy.

The Turkish community in France had been protesting the draft law since this morning because it was sure that the draft law would be adopted.

In their speeches, both pro-government and oppositionist deputies of the French Parliament expressed their positions for the draft law. According to them, the adoption of the draft law is honorable for France. The majority of the deputies said not criminalizing denial of the Armenian Genocide of 1915, as well as all genocides would be double genocide.

During today's debates, the Senators called on Turkey to recognize the past in order to build a future.

The Turkish authorities continue to threaten France.

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan has declared that Turkey will be terminating military partnership with France and won't be allowing French combat planes to make landings at Turkish airports and French combat ships to throw anchors at Turkish harbors.
