Armenia's National Assembly started its recurrent four-day session on Monday with NA Speaker Hovik Abrahamyan's resignation.

The outgoing Parliament Speaker noted that during his tenure of office he had been most tolerant; different opinions were expressed from the NA tribune, including non-standard ones. Abrahamyan reiterated that he resigns to head the election office of the Republican Party of Armenia during the 2012 parliamentary elections and said that ‘organization of high-level elections is a matter of honour for each Armenian.'

Abrahamyan further announced that he did not shrink away from obligations and commitments he had before his voters and would continue to present their interests as a deputy elected on a majoritarian ticket.

He thanked his colleagues for joint work and Heritage MPs for their advice.

Following Abrahamyan's speech, Head of Heritage faction Stepan Safaryan said that parliament speaker's resignation came as an utter surprise for his party.
